Discovering Portugal’s Wild Coast & an Idyllic Yoga Retreat

A Journey That Changed Everything
Portugal wasn’t somewhere I had explored much, until a trip with my family a few years ago changed that completely. From the moment we arrived, I was hooked.

We spent a couple of weeks in the Alentejo region, stretching down Portugal’s wild and untouched west coast. Before arriving, I had heard whispers of a beautiful eco-farm retreat nearby, and I had already decided I’d carve out time to visit.

The Alentejo sits about two hours south of Lisbon and roughly the same distance north of Faro. We flew into Lisbon first, spending a few days soaking up the city before heading down the coast, and it turned out to be the perfect start.

From Lisbon to the Unspoilt Coast
Lisbon was effortlessly charming. We wandered its winding streets on foot and by tram, discovering tucked-away cafés and vibrant corners at every turn. One day, we took the train to Cascais and cycled along the coastal path, the Atlantic stretching endlessly beside us.

Then we picked up a hire car and began the journey south, stopping in Comporta for a long, relaxed beach lunch along the way.

We were staying near the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Each morning began with an invigorating dip in the Atlantic, followed by the simple pleasure of a perfectly baked pastel de nata and strong coffee in the town square.

Slow Days, Epic Beaches
Days unfolded slowly. We packed picnics and set out to explore a different beach each day. The coastline was wild, rugged, and breathtaking – vast stretches of sand framed by dramatic cliffs. I still remember stepping onto Praia Malhão for the first time and feeling completely blown away by its beauty.

There was a vibrant energy to the beaches, surrounded by locals, surfers and families, but they never felt crowded. Some of us even took surf lessons, embracing the rhythm of the ocean with plenty of laughter along the way.

One morning, we kayaked along the Mira River where it meets the sea. Out on the water, everything felt still and expansive, a quiet contrast to the energy of the coastline.

Evenings were simple and perfect. Our favourite spot was a small beachside restaurant called A Choupana, where we ate freshly grilled sardines, drank vinho verde, and watched the sun melt into the ocean.

A Hidden Sanctuary: Cocoon Retreat
During the trip, I took some time out to visit Cocoon Retreat, just a short drive from where we were staying. Tucked away in nature, it felt peaceful and completely removed from the outside world.

The setting was an eco-farm, with chickens, goats, and even peacocks wandering freely. A natural swimming lake shimmered in the sunlight, and hammocks were scattered beneath the trees, perfect for slow afternoons with a book.

The yoga shala, shaded by pine trees, created a beautiful space to practise outdoors, while the indoor studio offered a calm and welcoming retreat on cooler days. Meals were shared on a terrace overlooking the land – fresh, vibrant, and nourishing. The bedrooms felt cool, comfortable, and quietly luxurious.

It was clear to me then that this place, and this coastline, were something special.

Returning to What Matters
Since that first visit, Cocoon has become a firm favourite on the YOAS calendar, and we have returned every July.

This year, we’ll be back at Cocoon Retreat from 4–11 July, a week led by Amy McDonald, a teacher who holds space with warmth and depth. Throughout the week, you’ll be guided through uplifting Jivamukti flows, restorative yin, meditation, breathwork, and chanting, all woven together with thoughtful readings and essential oils.

It’s more than just a retreat. It’s a chance to slow down, reconnect, and experience the magic of Portugal’s Atlantic coast in a truly meaningful way.

If this calls to you, find out more and reserve your place here for a week of yoga, nature, and deep rest.
