Epidavros – The Perfect Place for a Yoga Retreat in Greece
February 19, 2026 8:40 amAmy McDonald taught her first yoga retreat in Epidavros in Greece, and tells us 5 reasons why it is the perfect place for a yoga retreat.
There are places that feel nice to visit, and then there are places that quietly change how you experience yourself.
Epidavros is one of those places.
The name Epidavros is often translated as “centre of the aura”. A place where energy gathers, settles, and recalibrates. Whether you experience that symbolically or energetically, it feels uncannily accurate once you spend time here.
I first came to Epidavros over a decade ago, and in 2017 I taught my very first yoga retreat there. Since then, I’ve returned again and again. Over time, this place has become one of my favourite settings in the world to practise, teach, and retreat.
Here are five reasons why Epidavros continues to hold such a special place in my heart and is the perfect place to retreat.
1. A Land Deeply Rooted in Ancient Healing
Epidavros is known as the birthplace of Asklepios, the ancient Greek god of healing. In antiquity, people travelled here from across Greece and beyond to visit the Asklepion, one of the most important healing centres of the ancient world.
Healing here was never rushed or reductionist. It was holistic and intentional. People rested, walked in nature, bathed, fasted, dreamt, and took part in rituals designed to support the whole human experience. Body, mind, emotions, and spirit were all considered essential.
For us as yoga practitioners, this philosophy feels familiar.
Yoga invites us to slow down, regulate the nervous system, and reconnect with ourselves beneath the noise of daily life. In Epidavros, this process feels supported by the land itself. A return to centre. A return to balance.
2. Sound, Vibration & the Power of Presence
The ancient theatre of Epidavros is world-renowned for its extraordinary acoustics. A whisper spoken at the centre of the stage can be heard clearly from the highest tier.
Sound and vibration were understood as part of the healing process. Much like mantra, chanting, and conscious breath in yoga, the ancient Greeks recognised that vibration could reach places words alone could not.
Visiting the theatre is a reminder that presence itself is a practice. Nothing needs to be forced or performed. You simply listen, and something settles.
Music is woven into everyday life here. In fact, Epidavros is home to the Epidaurus Festival, part of the internationally renowned Athens & Epidaurus Festival, which runs each year from June through August and attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. During this time, the ancient theatre becomes a living performance space once again, filled with opera, music, and classical drama, its acoustics carrying every note with extraordinary clarity.
And sometimes, the magic is far more intimate. Last year, while we were sitting in a local restaurant celebrating my birthday, the woman dining at the table next to us happened to be an opera singer. When she heard it was my birthday, she stood up and sang for us, right there between the tables. No stage, no announcement, just a voice rising into the evening air. It felt like the most perfect expression of this place. Music here doesn’t belong only in theatres. It lives in the land, in the people, and in the moment itself.
3. A Lively Village With Space to Breathe
Epidavros is a small village, but it has a gentle buzz. Locals gathering for coffee, boats coming and going, conversations spilling into the evenings.
Food is fresh, seasonal, and simple. Our meals are shared at Hotel Mike, where the food is nourishing, fresh and made with care. Meals are enjoyed slowly, and they become part of the rhythm of the retreat. Grounding, connecting, and restorative.
Often in the mornings, before the day fully begins, we take a gentle walk up the hill to a small chapel overlooking the Sunken City beach and the ocean beyond. The body wakes up, the breath deepens, and the wide view naturally shifts perspective.
This balance of village life and spaciousness makes Epidavros an ideal place for the benefits of retreat.
4. The Sea, the Sunken City & Perspective
The Sunken City beach is one of the most quietly powerful places in the area.
Wading into the clear, shallow water, you can see the outlines of ancient walls and pathways beneath your feet. A city that once stood above water now rests calmly beneath the sea.
It’s an experience that brings yoga philosophy into the body. Impermanence. Letting go. Being held by something larger than ourselves.
The beach itself is calm and uncrowded, offering space for swimming, snorkelling, reflection and rest. The nervous system softens here without effort.
5. Simple Excursions That Support Integration
A yoga retreat in Epidavros naturally extends beyond the mat.
You can spend time in the local village, take boat trips where dolphins and turtles are sometimes spotted, and visit the island of Spetses. Elegant, relaxed, and largely car-free, Spetses invites wandering, swimming, and long lunches by the harbour. It brings lightness and joy into the retreat experience.
You can also visit Athinas for a single day tasting experience. A beachside spot near the Sunken City where we sample local olive oil and produce and enjoy another flavour of the region in a simple, grounded way.
These experiences aren’t just extras. They are part of the practice. They help integrate what we explore in yoga into daily life.
Why Epidavros Stays With You
Epidavros is the kind of place that lingers long after you leave.
There is the weight of history, from the Asklepion to the ancient theatre, sitting lightly alongside everyday life. A village that feels lively and real, with good food, warm evenings, and sea air always close by. The Sunken City offering quiet perspective, the sea inviting you in, and simple excursions that give you a sense of the wider region without rushing you through it.
Music drifts through the culture here, sometimes on a grand scale during the Epidaurus Festival, sometimes unexpectedly in the most ordinary of moments. Sound, landscape, and rhythm feel woven into daily life rather than put on display.
It’s a place that balances depth with ease. Where you can explore, swim, eat well, walk, and rest without needing to over-plan or perform. Everything is close. Everything is human-scale.
That’s what makes Epidavaros such a special place to travel to, and such a natural setting for a yoga retreat. You’re not stepping out of life. You’re stepping into it more fully.
Epidavros doesn’t ask much of you.
It simply gives you space to arrive.
