About Bala Brook

Bala Brook is nestled in its own valley on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park.

The retreat centre is located beside a fast-flowing moorland brook and surrounded by nature. It offers privacy and tranquillity on retreat in a beautiful and nurturing setting.

The sound of rushing water, the changing of the seasons, the benign presence of the trees, the proximity of the moor, the everchanging colours, the darkness at night, the deep silence – all of this is hugely beneficial to mind, body and spirit.

Retreat programme

The first class will be on Thursday evening, followed by a delicious dinner. Raquel will then lead you through two classes on the Friday and Saturday, a more dynamic morning class to align to body and breath and an afternoon practice to delve deeper into the postures and relax and restore. On Sunday there will be a morning practice before breakfast, another shorter class before lunch and the end of the retreat.

Each day after morning yoga and a healthy breakfast, there will be the opportunity to walk, have a massage, relax, explore the moor and wander in nature.

Arrival time on Thursday 29 August is from 4pm onwards. The first yoga session will be at 5.30pm. The weekend will finish on Sunday 1 September after lunch at 2.30pm.

Things to do

From Bala Brook there are lots of beautiful walks to go on exploring the wild and raw nature of the moor and Dartmoor National Park.  There are also plenty of relaxation spots for you to take advantage of in the grounds.

Have a massage, read your book, stomp out across the moor or meander slowly around the garden. Whatever you do, enjoy slowing down and recharging in nature.

Accommodation & food

Bala Brook comprises a main house and a separate modern annexe called Shraddha. There are various room options to choose from - single en-suite rooms, twin and triple options plus 2 sweet Kuti, monastic style retreat rooms with shared bathroom facilities.

All food is vegetarian, fresh, local and delicious to support your practise and retreat experience.

Client Reviews

I attended the YOAS retreat in Bala Brook, Dartmoor this weekend and can highly recommend it. The venue was fantastic - peaceful and surrounded by nature. The yoga was amazing as always and the food prepared by local chef Charlotte was incredible too.
Laura
I absolutely loved the retreat. Lovely peaceful surroundings, the most delicious food. The days were so well set out with plenty of truly inspiring yoga from Raquel. She is such a knowledgeable and intuitive teacher. I learnt so much from her, not just yoga, also about my body and mind. Finally, we were blessed with a lovely group of yogis which enhanced the weekend even more.
Jane
It was a fantastic long weekend at Bala Brook. Everything worked well in the most beautiful and well appointed of retreat spaces. Green and cool, with Bala brook itself alongside, we all loved this generous space which was such a welcome change from the heat of recent weeks. With beautiful starry skies and the Supermoon we were spoiled indeed.
